OMRON Proximity Sensors Just insert and tighten!

OMRON Proximity Sensors Product development story

The development of the technology that forms the basis of the long-distance stable detection technology installed in E2E-NEXT began in 2000. The housing size of the OMRON Proximity Sensors is small, starting from a φ3 cylindrical shape,and the number of parts that can be mounted inside this housing is limited. The main circuit needs to be integrated using semiconductor process technology, so a custom IC is used.

Conventional custom ICs have been equipped with custom ICs composed of analog circuits.
However, the digital correction technology, which is an important element in realizing the long-distance stable detection that is the key to E2E-NEXT, has a large circuit scale and requires a fundamental review of the circuit design. Wedecided to use a digital-analog hybrid IC with a built-in digital circuit that can be finely wired. The feature of
this IC is that it can digitally control the oscillation amplitude of the Proximity Sensors and digitize and control the adjustment amount for each sensor.

The detection distance-temperature characteristics of the Proximity Sensors are affected by the temperature characteristics of the parts and the layout of the circuit, so optimization is required for each type.
In addition, the amount of correction for the detection distance depends on the shape and positional variation of the parts that make up the sensor, which causes variation.
Conventionally, this correction was adjusted in the intermediate process of production, but this is a major error factor.
Therefore, by using a unique communication method to write correction data for detection distance - temperature characteristics into the digital-analog hybrid IC, it became possible to carry out the correction at the final inspection. The

most difficult aspect of developing this digital-analog hybrid IC was that it was necessary to define all of the requirements and incorporate them into the IC specifications, even though these were taken for granted in conventional analogICs and specifications that were implicitly determined from past experience. Numerous problems occurred due to insufficient condition setting and incorporation into the specifications of Proximity Sensors, and there were many times whenthe schedule had to be readjusted.
However, by continuing the challenge without giving up, I believe we have achieved the world's longest detection distance* for a two-wire Proximity Sensors.
